Bob Bradley is the new coach of Egypt.
The Egyptian FA hired the former U.S. national team and MLS coach on Thursday to replace long-serving manager Hassan Shehata. The decision was announced on the organization's official website after Bradley arrived in Cairo a day earlier.
“Bradley signed a two-year contract with the EFA to be in charge of the Egyptian National team until the 2014 World Cup in Brazil for 30,000 euros per month,” Egyptian FA spokeman Azmy Megahed told Ahram Online.
Bradley's agent Ron Waxman tweeted on Thursday that the news of the hiring was "premature", but he eventually confirmed the deal on Twitter on Saturday.
"Bob Bradley has officially signed to be the Coach of the Egyptian National Team and will be presented shortly. A historic day!" the agent said.
Goal.com first reported Egypt's interest in Bradley shortly after he was fired by the U.S. team in July. But reports suggested the two sides were initially far apart on contract negotiations, which led to the long delay of the hiring.
Colombian Fancisco Maturana and Serbian Zoran Filipović were also finalists for the position.
Bradley, a New Jersey native, was replaced by Jurgen Klinsmann as the U.S. boss in July shortly after the squad lost to Mexico in the Gold Cup final. He finished his U.S. career with a record of 43 wins, 25 losses and 12 draws in over four years.
The 53-year-old led the Americans to the 2009 Confederation Cup final after defeating Egypt 3-0 in the group stage. Last year, he led the U.S. to the final 16 of the World Cup in South Africa.
The fresh start could not only benefit Bradley but also American soccer if he is successful with Egypt. He could open the door for other American coaches to join international teams as he becomes the first American to lead an African squad.
